Thai Culture

When we visit a country it is always in our best interest to observe local customs or beliefs. By doing this we are mindful travelers and do not make our lives unknowingly difficult.

Below is a selection of do’s and don’ts one should follow while visiting Thailand. Some you may know already, some may be completely new to you.

The Monarchy

You should show nothing but the highest respect for the Thai Monarchy, led by King Bhumibol. It is extremely insulting for any Thai to hear criticisms or anything but praise regarding their royal family.

Please be warned as a few hapless tourists end up in prison every year through this carelessness.

Shoes

It is important to mention that Thai people concider the feet to be the dirtiest part of the body, whilst the head is the most respected.

With this in mind:

When entering a person’s home it is customary to remove your shoes, as these are seen as unclean.

Head & Feet

Under no circumstances should you point your feet at anybody else. This also includes indicating at something with your feet or stepping over someone.

It is notable to not touch anyone’s head, especially children, as this is considered disrespectful.

Concept of "Face"

In Asian culture there is a common thread in the various cultures of “face”.

Please avoid at all costs the need to lose your temper or argue.

Disputes should be handled with a smile and no apportion of blame to either party.

It is extremely important for a Thai person not to lose “face”.

Dress

Koh Lanta is a tropical Island full of beaches.

It is also inhabited largely by a Muslim population.

So after your time sunbathing or swimming, please be mindful to dress respectfully away from the beach whilst shopping or going to restaurants or bars.
